A sheet of waterslide decals from the Mark I brand with the rank flags of the Royal Air Force. It is not a kit and not a model, but supplementary marking for modelers who want to take their scene all the way down to the detail. Check on the box which particular ranks the sheet contains and in what quantity.
The Royal Air Force has an elaborate system of rank flags and pennants used to mark the presence of a senior officer. They are derived from the national insignia of the Royal Air Force and differ in the color field and in additional elements according to the rank. For a modeler it is a small thing that can give a scene context: a rank flag says unambiguously that someone from the command staff was present at the place or with the machine depicted. It therefore comes into its own mainly in dioramas and on aircraft connected with staff duty.
The 1:144 scale means that the individual markings are very small and you need to work calmly and under good light. First go over the area on which you will lay the decal with gloss varnish, so that air does not get caught under the film and a matte frame does not stay around the marking. Cut the decal off together with the backing, dip it briefly in lukewarm water and move it with a moistened brush; tweezers come in handy for holding the backing, as the film itself is fragile at this scale and easily folds over. Finish the seating with a decal softener, which draws the decal down to the surface. Once it has dried, overcoat with matte or satin varnish, so that the edges of the film disappear.
