A sheet of waterslide decals from the Mark I brand. It is not a kit and not a model, but a set of national marking for a finished, painted aircraft. The sheet is the first part of a series devoted to the roundels of British night fighter machines of the First World War; the second part comes out separately. Check the extent of the sheet and the number of individual markings on the box.
British aircraft of the First World War wore a circular roundel in the order blue, white, red. On machines that took off at night against airships and bombers, however, the ordinary marking was modified: the white was darkened, subdued or left out altogether, so that the national insignia would not give the machine away so much in the light of searchlights. That gave rise to variants of roundels that differ strikingly from the daytime standard. On a model it is a detail that places the machine with the night home defense at first glance, and one that cannot be replaced by decals from an ordinary kit.
Prepare the surface with gloss varnish, as on matte paint air gets caught under the film of the decal and a light frame stays around the marking. Cut the decal out together with the backing, dip it in lukewarm water for a few seconds and let it rest until it starts to slide freely. Transfer it onto the model with a moistened brush, press the water out from under the film with a soft cloth and only then apply a decal softener. On First World War aircraft there is extra work from the ribbed fabric covering of the wings: a decal softener is exactly what draws the decal into the hollows between the ribs, so that the marking does not look stuck on glass. Once it has dried, unify the surface with matte varnish.
