A set of the right avionics bay for the Grumman F-14D in 1:48 scale. A detailed accessory for a kit of the combat aircraft, not a model of an airplane.
Responsibility details are not available.
An accessory set from the manufacturer Black Dog model for a model of the Grumman F-14D in 1:48 scale. It is not a model of an airplane, but a detailed treatment of the service bay with electronics on the right side of the forward fuselage. The model can thus be built with the panels open, as the aircraft looks during maintenance between flights.
The sides of the forward fuselage of the Tomcat hid bays with electronic equipment, accessible through hinged service panels. On the F-14D version the avionics went through a fundamental change, as the aircraft received digital systems and a newer generation of radar, so the contents of the bays differed from the first series. Open panels belonged to the everyday picture of an aircraft carrier deck, because preparing an aircraft between flights required regular access to the equipment. For a modeler it is a rewarding way to give a model a story and to show the work of the technical personnel.
Plan the installation before gluing the fuselage. Cut the panel out with a sharp knife or a fine saw in thin steps and sand the edges into as thin an edge as possible, so that they do not look coarse. Paint the inside, accentuate it with a wash and possibly go over it gently with a dry brush before gluing it in. Choose the colors so that the individual blocks do not blend together, otherwise the work with the detail is lost. Glue the plastic parts with plastic cement, and for joints with another material use cyanoacrylate glue in a minimal quantity. Support the open panels, so that they hold a stable angle.
