This LACI set replaces the engine nacelles on a model of the four-engine long-haul Airbus A340 in 1:144 scale, and that in the special version with the thrust reversers open. The model can thus be built in the moment shortly after touchdown, when the aircraft is braking with reverse thrust. It is not an aircraft model but an add-on for a plastic kit: the original nacelles are removed and the parts from the set are seated in their place.
The CFM56-5C engine is the most powerful version of the CFM56 family and was developed directly for the four-engine Airbus A340 in the 200 and 300 versions. It differs from the smaller variants of the series in its larger dimensions and in a differently arranged nacelle. The A340 served with it on long-haul routes at a time when the rules for operating twin-engine aircraft over the ocean were stricter, and four engines meant operational freedom. The thrust reversers open after touchdown and, together with the extended high-lift devices, they belong among the most conspicuous details of the aircraft on landing. On a model it is an effect that suits a runway scene or a diorama in particular.
Cut the original nacelles off the kit and level the surface on the pylon with a file, so that the replacement seats without a gap. Dry-fit the parts and make sure that all the engines have the same angle and the same alignment, which matters even more on a four-engine aircraft than on a twin. Bond with super glue in small drops. The open reversers expose inner surfaces that cannot be sprayed once glued, so paint them in advance and dose the glue carefully, so that it does not run onto the visible parts. Airliner models have gloss finishes on which every unevenness shows, so give the sanding enough time.
