1:72 Nakajima B5N Kate undercarriage bay paint masks is a set of painting templates for the landing gear bays of a model of the Japanese carrier torpedo aircraft in 1:72 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The set serves to cover the inside of the landing gear bays at the moment the top varnish is sprayed onto the model. The bay is painted first, then it is covered with the mask and the rest of the model is finished with no risk of a shade getting inside where it does not belong. The masks are cut for 1:72 scale.
The Nakajima B5N was a carrier torpedo and bomber aircraft of the Imperial Japanese Navy, listed by the Allies under the code name Kate. The B5N1 and B5N2 versions differed in the powerplant and in partial changes to the airframe. The machine had retractable main landing gear, so on a model built with the legs extended the bays are clearly visible.
The inside of the bay is sprayed first, because it tends to have a different shade from the outer surface of the airframe. The paint must dry thoroughly, and only then is the mask seated in the bay. The primer and the top varnish of the whole model follow. The masks are taken off only once the last coat has dried, so that the edge does not tear and the paint does not pull threads. Anyone who reverses the order sprays the bay a second time and never keeps a clean transition in the corners.
