Fifteen-inch wire wheels of the British type for classic roadsters and coupes, 1:24 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
A spoked wheel with steel wires belonged on British sports cars throughout the 1950s and 1960s. In engineering terms it was a compromise: the wires carried the loads in tension, which made the wheel lighter than a solid disc and let it cool better from the brake. Most of these cars carried them on a center-lock hub with a wing nut, so a wheel change in the pits took seconds.
A see-through wheel center completely changes the balance of masses on the side of the car. Where a solid disc closes the wheel arch and creates a second dark area next to the body, the wires make it transparent, so the eye passes through and the car looks lighter and slimmer. With the long hood and low tail of a typical roadster this underlines the slenderness of the whole silhouette. Together with the tall sidewall of a fifteen-inch tire it produces the period-correct gap between the body and the ground that modern low-profile wheels can never give.
The casting of a wire wheel is the most demanding of all types to paint, because the lacquer easily builds up between the wires and flattens them into one surface. Apply thin coats from several directions and lift the excess off with a brush. The center with the wing nut is worth bringing out in a glossy shade, as it is the most conspicuous point of the whole wheel. Finally go over the circumference with a dark wash so that the wires stand apart to the eye.
They serve best on cars that are to stay in their period guise: sporting two-seater models, touring coupes and club racing specials. A wire wheel does not suit a modern subject; there it would break the unity of the shapes.
