Magnesium wheels from the circuit-tuned specification of the Porsche 918, 20 and 21 inches in diameter, 1:24 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The sharper version of the hypercar received wheels in a lighter alloy. The difference was not cosmetic: lower unsprung mass improves the response of the dampers and the ability of the wheel to follow the surface. The designers could at the same time afford finer spokes, because the alloy takes greater stress at a smaller cross-section.
Thinner spokes open a view into the wheel, so the brake disc and part of the suspension can be seen. The side of the car thereby loses the closed smoothness of the factory version and takes on a technical, race-bred expression. The play of light changes as well: instead of one large reflective surface there are narrow bright edges separated by shadows, which brings out the circle of the wheel and the arch above it. In photographs of a finished model this shows above all under side lighting.
The magnesium rims on the real subject usually carried a dark or anthracite surface with a matte sheen. So that the fine spokes do not disappear, go over their edges with a tone a shade lighter and darken the gaps between them instead. Behind the wheel the brake can no longer be left out: with the view open, an empty space would be noticed at once, so suggest the disc and the caliper with at least two shades.
The choice makes sense on a car in the specification for fast driving, on an example caught on a circuit and wherever the build should look lighter than a factory piece. For the original road guise the factory wheel shape remains the better fit.
