Mazda RX-7 FD3S Kai as a plastic kit in 1:24 – a modified execution of the third generation of the rotary coupe.
Responsibility details are not available.
The real subject is the third generation of the Mazda RX-7, which Japanese modelers know under the body code FD3S. The qualifier Kai moves it from the factory state into the world of individual modifications; it is precisely in this setting that the FD3S became a legend and to this day belongs among the most frequently rebuilt Japanese coupes.
The Japanese expression kai can be translated loosely as modified or rebuilt. In the names of modeling sets it denotes a car that differs from the production form in body accessories, in wheels or in a modification of the suspension. With the third generation of the RX-7 the whole scene set out in this direction: the basis remains a light body with an almost even distribution of weight between the axles and the 13B-REW rotary engine, onto which wider rims, more pronounced aerodynamics and a lowered suspension were hung.
On modified cars the interplay of the body and the wheels decides more than on production executions, so it pays off to plan the color scheme before the first paint is reached for. The body accessories often call for the mating surfaces to be sanded down, so that they sit without gaps. Dark shades look splendid but will mercilessly show every unevenness; a smooth ground is therefore half the success. The wheels and the brakes are finished separately and fitted right at the end.
The parts await assembly and spraying; a finished car will not drive out of the box.
