1:24 Roof rack

A roof rack 1:24 (Yamamoto Model Parts)

An add-on set in 1:24 scale with a roof rack for models of cars. It is an accessory for a base kit, not a model of a vehicle on its own. A roof rack belongs among those accessories which change the overall silhouette of a car: out of an ordinary mass-produced model it makes a vehicle ready for a journey, a move or a trip into rough terrain, and it is fitted simply, from the outside and without cutting into the interior.

What the part is for

You will use the rack on a build of an expedition or overland vehicle, on period stylizations and as a load-bearing element of a diorama: a load, luggage or tools can be built onto the roof and the scene gains a story at once. It also works well as a unifying element when you are building several vehicles for one display case. Because it is glued onto the external surface of the body, it can be added to a model you already have finished.

Building and painting tips

First lay the rack on the roof dry and mark the position with a pencil or masking tape, as a rack glued on out of true is visible from every angle. Glue with super glue (cyanoacrylate) and apply it drop by drop, so that it does not run onto the painted surface; on small contact faces the gel version, which does not run, comes in handy. If the part is of resin, wash it in lukewarm soapy water before painting and cut the casting blocks away with a saw. It is more comfortable to paint it separately, over a filler primer; a finished rack then takes a light wash into the seams and, on a dusty build, a dust pigment too.
