Mark V b gave the type a second wind. A Merlin of the 45 series came under the cowling and a pair of twenty-millimeter cannons complemented by four machine guns went into the wing, a combination known as the b wing. You will meet these machines in photographs from Malta, from the North African coast and from home squadrons, many with a bulky dust filter under the nose. It was the most widespread form of the Spitfire in the period when the war was only just turning.
Paint that has run under is nothing to mourn; it can be repaired. While it is fresh, it scrapes off with the tip of a toothpick or a wooden stick, which are softer than clear plastic and will not leave a scratch. Dried paint is removed with a cotton swab lightly moistened in alcohol, drawn always along the frame, never across it. If the frame itself gets damaged, remask only the affected place with a narrow strip cut from the remains of the sheet and spray again, lightly and in two passes. There is no need to repaint the whole part for the sake of one edge.
Cockpit glazing from both sides, five masks for the national insignia and decals with them. A higher number of insignia masks is useful especially in a large scale, where the markings appear on both sides of the fuselage, on the upper and the lower surface of the wing and sometimes on the rudder as well. Keep the sheet once the work is done; the remains of film between the cutouts are a rewarding material for small repairs to edges.
