A detail accessory for the cabin of a car model being built in 1:24 scale. The steering wheel is one of the first things visible through an open window, and the plastic part out of a kit tends to be thicker and more softly shaped than reality would call for, because of the injection molding technology. The set from the Polish brand Yamamoto Model Parts replaces it with a more finely rendered part.
A sports steering wheel has a smaller diameter than a production one, a deeper dish to the rim and thin metal spokes that leave the view of the instruments clear. A smaller diameter means faster steering, though it takes more force, which is why it is used where precision matters. The rim tends to be covered in suede or leather and completed with the maker's badge in the center; it is exactly that combination of thin spokes and a thicker rim that makes the characteristic silhouette on a model.
Cut the original steering wheel out of the kit off as close to the column as you can with a fine-toothed saw and level the stub with a file, which is far better than breaking it off, as that often tears away a piece of the column too. Clean the mold release agent off the new part and work patiently at removing the casting block: the spokes are the thinnest place in the whole set and a badly guided cut will break them. The steering column and the hub of the wheel are joined reliably with a pin, so drill a coaxial hole in both parts, insert a piece of wire and secure the joint with super glue. Without a pin, a plain butt joint holds poorly and comes loose easily while a finished interior is being handled. The rim looks good in a deep matte black that you lighten only faintly with a dry brush once it has dried, and the spokes in a matte metal.
This is an accessory to a model, not a kit in its own right. The parts are supplied unpainted; glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
