In the 1960s the Impala was the flagship of Chevrolet's production range, a large car with a roomy body on a separate frame. That simple frame and the affordable V8s are exactly what made it a frequent basis for amateur oval conversions. The modified stocker designation belongs to cars that start from a production body but have strengthened construction, a roll cage, a reworked chassis and a lightened interior. Cars in that form raced on short ovals all over the United States and every team modified its own in its own way, so two identical cars practically did not exist.
Build the chassis and the drivetrain first and only then deal with the body - with oval conversions more machinery is on view than with production models. Sand the body, spray a filler primer and apply the paint in thin coats; racing cars will bear a less than perfect gloss, because wear and dust are expected on them. Settle the decals on a gloss surface with a decal softener. Keep the weathering sparing: a fine darker wash into the joints, a suggestion of dust on the wheel wells and rubber marks on the fenders are enough.
