A dipping ink from the Green Stuff World brand in a 60 ml package, a purple shade. It is applied generously over the whole part and the shadow finds its place by itself - it settles where the surface is deepest.
On a single figure you can play with the shadow for a long time. On twenty figures of the same unit, however, you run into a different problem: every one has to look the same, otherwise the whole group looks mismatched. Shading by hand cannot guarantee that, because toward the end of the session the hand has a different rhythm than at the start. A dipping ink simplifies the task - the procedure is the same on every piece, a generous coat and removal of the excess, and the decision about where the darker place will be is taken over by the shape of the casting. The result is therefore consistent across the whole group and it does not matter which piece in the row you are holding. A wash on this job would mean going through every groove on every figure separately, even where there are a lot of details.
For tabletop players and modelers who need to manage a whole unit in a reasonable time and at the same time keep the same standard on every piece.
