About product

Lifecolor US Army Olive Drab 1950 to 1984 - a paint set

A set of paints from the Italian brand Lifecolor aimed at the olive finish of American army equipment in the period from the 1950s to the beginning of the 1980s. It is not a kit and not an accessory to a model but painting material for modelers who build American vehicles of the Cold War, of the Korean conflict or of the war in Vietnam.

The real subject

The olive finish, in American terminology olive drab, went with the equipment of the United States Army for several decades and became its hallmark. It was a uniform overall finish without a camouflage pattern, used on tanks, armored personnel carriers, trucks, artillery and small equipment alike. In practice, however, it never looked like one color: the shade differed according to the production batch, the age of the finish, the degree of fading in the sun and whether a vehicle had been repainted in the field or in a workshop. Only in the 1980s was it gradually replaced by multicolored camouflage schemes.

How to work with the paints

It is precisely the differences between the shades that make a model convincing. Lay the base tone on over the whole area, then lighten the inner areas of the large panels and darken the edges and the recesses instead, and the model will take on the volume that a uniform finish does not have by itself. The shades can be mixed, so you can prepare a variant of a freshly painted machine next to a vehicle that stood in the field for years. Shake the bottles properly before work and thin according to the manufacturer's recommendation. A painted surface is then an ideal base for washes, chipping and dust pigments.

Who the set is for

For modelers of American postwar equipment, for builders of dioramas from Korea, Vietnam and the European training grounds of the Cold War, and for anyone who wants the olive shades in one consistent line.

FAQ

Real equipment never looked like one color. The shade differed according to the batch, the age of the finish and the fading, and it is precisely these differences that make a model realistic.

Yes. Besides vehicles, the olive finish covered transport crates, jerrycans and part of the field equipment.

The set is defined by the period from 1950. For equipment of the Second World War a set aimed directly at that era is more suitable.

The exact list is stated on the box of the set. The shades are chosen so as to cover the range of olive from a fresh finish to a faded one.
