Copper State Models of Riga in Latvia takes up, besides the equipment of the First World War, the period immediately after it as well. This figure set in 1:35 scale takes up the subject of the flamethrower crew of the German volunteer units known as the Freikorps. It is a subject that appears only rarely among modeling products, so for builders of scenes of the turn of the years 1918 to 1923 it is an interesting widening of the possibilities.
The Freikorps were volunteer paramilitary formations that arose in Germany after the end of the First World War. They were made up largely of veterans of the war and the units were committed in domestic political clashes and in the Baltic region. They took over their equipment and armament predominantly from army stocks, so field uniforms, helmets and special devices from the last years of the war appeared with them. Among those were portable flamethrowers as well, that is weapons that called for a well drilled crew and a clear division of roles among its members.
The crew of a weapon is rewarding from the point of view of composition, because a shared task joins the figures and the scene holds together even without equipment. It pays off to count on enough room on the base and on elements of city or suburban buildings that match the character of the use of these units. For matching the colors of the composition, period photographs are the guide.
