1:3000 New Warship Collection Series Shou Ichi-Go Operation/Operation Kita Aircraft Battleship Fleet

The real subject

The set is put together around two Japanese naval operations from the late stage of the Second World War in the Pacific. At the core of the arrangement are aircraft battleships, that is battleships whose after part was rebuilt into a flight deck with a hangar for aircraft. The result was a transitional type of vessel that kept heavy gun armament in the forward half of the hull and offered room for an air component aft. The arrangement includes more than one hull, so it is not a single ship that stands in the cabinet but a whole formation.

What 1:3000 scale means

This is the scale of collector's formations, not of large cabinet models. A ship roughly two hundred and twenty meters long in reality measures a little over seven centimeters at this scale, so a whole group of vessels fits onto a board the size of an ordinary sheet of paper. The exact makeup of the set and the number of hulls are stated by the manufacturer on the box.

Building and painting tips

The parts are small. Separate them with a sharp blade a little away from the part and sand the rest carefully, work with tweezers and apply the glue with a pin so that it does not run out onto the surrounding surface. In painting at this scale what decides is the overall tone and a clean transition between the side of the hull and the underwater part, not fine detail. The superstructures and the masts will stand out better from a tone a shade darker than from any added highlighting.

• 1:3000 scale, collector's size
• a thematically assembled group of Japanese ships
• at the core of the arrangement are aircraft battleships
• the set is meant to be glued and painted
