This is a set of warning beacons in 1:35 scale, that is the rotating and flashing lights carried by emergency, recovery and maintenance vehicles on the cab roof. The number of parts and their finish are given by the manufacturer in the instructions for the set. The beacons suit vehicle models as well as a small detail in a diorama, because a scene with one strong spot of color reads more lively than a scene in a single shade.
Cut off the surplus material with a sharp blade a little away from the part and carefully sand the remainder with fine abrasive paper so as not to spoil the shape. The parts are small, so work over a tray with a raised rim. Wash and degrease the surface before painting and apply a primer coat, otherwise the covering layer holds poorly on a smooth surface. A suitable glue and the detailed procedure are given in the manufacturer's instructions.
A beacon looks best when the body is sprayed separately and the lens is painted only at the very end. The lenses are usually done in orange or blue and a coat of gloss varnish helps them a great deal, after which they start to look like glass. The undercoat beneath a translucent shade can well be sprayed silver, after which the light seems to be reflected from the inside.
The set is for the modeler who builds a vehicle or a scene and wants to add a detail that a kit usually lacks. The work is small but quick and shows on the result out of all proportion to the time it takes. The vehicle model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
