About product

The dekotora Aikoku Reiji-Maru in 1:32 scale

A plastic kit of the decorated Japanese truck Aikoku Reiji-Maru of the carrier Marumi Group in 1:32 scale from the Japanese company Aoshima. The essential information for anyone who wants to get it: it is a straight truck with a refrigerated body, that is, one vehicle, not a tractor with a semitrailer. The real subject is a particular actual truck documented in Hiroshima in 2012, not a general fantasy of the manufacturer.

The real subject

Dekotora is the Japanese phenomenon of decorated trucks, which arose in the 1970s and has lived a life of its own ever since. Drivers and owners dress their trucks in polished stainless steel, chrome, painted panels, dozens of lights and cut-out accessories, and add extended bumpers, a visor above the windshield, side skirts and frames with further lighting. The trucks are given names of their own, often ending in a word referring to the maritime tradition, and their owners group together into associations. This particular truck belongs to the family of vehicles of a carrier from Hiroshima and is built as a refrigerated truck, so on it the decoration meets equipment for carrying goods at a controlled temperature.

Building and painting tips

A dekotora is a build about gloss. Polished surfaces are done either with a quality chrome shade over a smooth black gloss base or with bare-metal foil; both are demanding on the cleanliness of the surface, so do not hurry the filler primer and the sanding. Build the painted panels as a separate sub-project: first smooth varnish, then the decals with a decal softener, and finally a gloss clear coat. We recommend fitting the lights and the surrounds only at the very end. The inside of the refrigerated body can be left simple, because once assembled it is no longer visible, but the door frames and the seals at the rear are worth picking out.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of Japanese trucks and fans of dekotora culture
  • Modelers who want to play with chrome, gloss surfaces and decals
  • Builders looking for a striking and unmistakable piece for a display case
  • More experienced modelers, as it is a more extensive and demanding build

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. The real subject is a straight truck, that is, one vehicle with a refrigerated body of its own. It is not a tractor with a semitrailer.

A Japanese style of decorating trucks that arose in the 1970s. The trucks are given polished stainless steel and chrome surfaces, dozens of lights, painted panels, extended bumpers and a name of their own.

Rather not. A decorated truck has a lot of small parts, large gloss surfaces and extensive markings, so the result stands or falls on careful preparation of the surface.

The basis is a Japanese heavy truck. You will find the particular type designation of the chassis on the box and in the instructions.
