About product

Avro Lancaster B. Mk.III Dambusters in 1:32 scale from Border Model

This kit is among the flagships of the Border Model range. It covers the four-engine Avro Lancaster heavy bomber in the B. Mk.III version and in the form tied to the attack on the German dams, after which the crews of No. 617 Squadron earned the nickname Dambusters. The name states a full interior explicitly, so the model allows for a worked-out fuselage interior, not just the external shape. In 1:32 scale it is an exceptionally large project that deserves a permanent place in a cabinet and the room to match.

The real subject

The Lancaster was the most successful British heavy bomber of the Second World War. The B. Mk.III version differed from the basic Mk.I in using Merlin engines built under license in the United States by the Packard company; otherwise it was a practically identical airframe with the roomy bomb bay that made the Lancaster the most versatile bomb carrier of its day.

The attack on the dams in the Ruhr in May 1943 was carried out by No. 617 Squadron with specially modified Lancasters of the Mk.III line. The modification was fundamental: the machines lost part of the bomb bay and the upper turret, received a powered swinging arm that spun up the cylindrical weapon designed by Barnes Wallis, and flew at extremely low altitude over the water. It was one of the technically boldest operations of the war, and the Lancaster in this form is therefore a modeling chapter of its own.

Building and painting tips

With a model that has a worked-out interior one rule holds: whatever will remain visible once the fuselage is closed, paint it and weather it before you join the halves. It pays to proceed in sections, to keep trying the fit dry and to watch that the internal fittings do not stop the halves seating. A large model needs a firm base, so allow for a filler primer and spraying with an airbrush. The night camouflage of British bombers has large dark areas, so it is good to shade the paint with a gentle lightening of the centers of the panels, or the finished model will visually get lost. Lay down a gloss varnish before the decals and a matte one after. With the landing gear, allow for the weight of the model and check that the legs seat correctly and without strain.

Who the model is for

  • experienced modelers looking for a large project over a longer time
  • collectors of British bomber aviation
  • those interested in the history of No. 617 Squadron and the attack on the dams
  • modelers who want to make full use of a worked-out interior

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The main difference is in the engines. The Mk.III used Merlin engines built under license in the United States by the Packard company; the airframe stayed practically identical to the basic Mk.I version.

The particular breakdown of the parts and the building options are in the instructions enclosed with the model.

The manufacturer gives the exact dimensions on the box, but allow for the fact that a four-engine heavy bomber in 1:32 scale is among the largest aircraft models of all and an ordinary cabinet may not be enough for it.
