This item is not a kit of the helicopter but a photo-etched accessory: parts in thin metal sheet that replace or supplement simplified plastic elements on a model of the Bell AH-1G Cobra in 1:32 scale. Note that a masking set for the same machine is also sold under the same name; this item is the photo-etched parts. The contents of the package and the number of parts are stated on the box.
Photo-etched sheet has a real thickness of hundredths of a millimeter, so it faithfully stands in for elements that on the real machine are thin sheet metal or wire: meshes, stiffeners, panels, seat belts or placards. In the large 1:32 scale that difference from plastic is markedly visible. The set tends to be cut for a particular kit, so check before buying that it matches the model you are building.
The AH-1G was the first production helicopter designed from the outset as an attack machine. It was based on the powerplant and rotor head of the UH-1 series transport helicopters, but it got an entirely new fuselage only a little over a meter wide, with a two-seat cockpit in tandem. The gunner sat in front, the pilot higher up behind him. The layout reduced the frontal area and became the model for later attack helicopters.
Cut the parts from the fret on a hard surface with a sharp scalpel, not with cutters, which deform the metal. Make the bends in a bending tool or between two razor blades, always along the etched groove. Degrease the metal before gluing and glue with cyanoacrylate or epoxy; cement for polystyrene does not hold on photo-etch. Sand away the plastic elements the photo-etch replaces first, otherwise the set will not line up.
The set holds photo-etched parts only. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
