About product

Bf 108 - wheels and paint masks, late version, 1:32 (Aires)

This is a detail set, not a model of an airplane. It combines two things that are directly related on a model: resin wheels with a finer execution of the tread pattern and the tire sidewalls than injected plastic can bear, and paint masks thanks to which the transition between the tire and the hub is sharp and without paint running over. It is the wheels that tend to be conspicuous on a finished model, because they are down low, close to the viewer, and a badly painted tire spoils the impression of the whole build. The designation of the late version means that the set keeps to the form of the wheels from the later period of service.

The real subject

The Messerschmitt Bf 108 was an all-metal single-engine low-wing monoplane of the 1930s with four seats in the cabin, which served as a touring, liaison and courier aircraft. In design it was an advanced machine with an enclosed cabin and retractable landing gear, and its engineering solutions foreshadowed the later fighter designs of the same manufacturer. Because the landing gear was retractable, the wheels are visible on the model above all in the extended position, with the aircraft built on the ground.

Building and painting tips

Wash the resin parts first in lukewarm soapy water. Cut the casting block off with a saw and level the surface on sandpaper laid on a flat board, so that the wheel stands straight. Paint the wheel first in the shade of the hub, let it dry thoroughly and only then fit the mask: pressure around the whole circumference matters more than speed. Spray the color of the tire in thin coats perpendicular to the edge of the mask, so that it does not run under. Remove the mask while the paint is still fresh but no longer wet. A pure black tire looks artificial; a dark gray shade is better, possibly supplemented with fine dust on the sidewalls.

Who the set is for

  • For modelers who want faithful wheels in a large scale without the mold seam in the middle of the tire.
  • For those who dislike tracing the border of the tire and the hub with a brush.
  • For builders of interwar and touring aircraft in a large scale.

The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. It is not a kit of an airplane but an accessory for one. Glue, paints and the base model are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise. Use respiratory protection when sanding resin.

FAQ

It is not. These are replacement wheels in resin and masks for painting them. The kit itself is bought separately.

The designation refers to a different form of the wheels in different periods of the aircraft's service. Compare the illustration on the packaging of both variants with the references for your own machine.

Paint the hub first, let it cure, press the mask down around the whole circumference and spray the color of the tire in thin coats perpendicular to the edge. A heavy wet coat runs under almost every time.

The execution of the sidewalls is stated on the box.
