The large scale means a sizeable finished model with a matching level of detail, and also greater demands on room in the cabinet. The model is meant to be built and painted; it is not a finished piece.
The Hawk 81-A2 is the export designation of the Curtiss fighter that corresponds to an early version of the P-40 series. It was an all-metal single-engine low-wing monoplane with retractable landing gear and a liquid-cooled V engine, whose characteristic mark is the deep radiator under the nose. The structure was robust, the aircraft stood up to rough handling and behaved well in a dive, yet at greater altitudes its performance fell away. The abbreviation AVG stands for the American Volunteer Group, a unit of American volunteer pilots active in 1941 and 1942 in China and Burma. The aircraft of this unit carried a conspicuous shark mouth painting on the nose, which became one of the best known color schemes in the history of aviation.
In the large scale the interior of the cockpit comes into its own, so it is worth devoting time to it before the fuselage is closed up. The sequence is the usual one: the cockpit, the engine section and the landing gear bays first, and only then the joining of the halves. Try the fuselage and the wing together dry, so that you know where filling will be needed. Mask the glazing and glue it with a cement intended for clear parts, as ordinary modeling cement would fog the surface. Apply a primer before painting; for a metal surface a smooth gloss undercoat is appropriate. Spray sharp transitions between colors with an airbrush at low pressure, and handle the painting on the nose according to the instructions and the decal sheet in the package. Coat the area with gloss varnish before the decals and unify it after drying with a matte or semi-matte varnish. Keep the weathering restrained, so that it matches operation under field conditions.
