About product

Resin wheels for the Vampire Mk.3 and Mk.5 in 1:32 scale

This is not a model of an aircraft but an add-on set. It replaces the wheels from the plastic Vampire kit in 1:32 scale with more accurate resin castings. The wheels are made as weighted, so the tire is slightly sagged where it meets the ground and the wheel rests on the surface over its whole contact patch. The model thereby loses the typical look of an aircraft standing on perfectly round wheels and appears as if the weight of the machine really were resting on the landing gear. The type 3 designation refers to a particular form of tire in the manufacturer's range.

The real subject

The de Havilland Vampire was a British jet fighter with a characteristic pair of tail booms and a short fuselage nacelle. It was powered by a de Havilland Goblin centrifugal-flow jet engine. The F.3 version, that is the Mk.3, received revised tail surfaces and greater range, while the Mk.5, that is the FB.5, was a fighter-bomber variant with clipped wings and strengthened landing gear for operation from less prepared surfaces. The Vampire served in the postwar years with a number of European and overseas air forces and became one of the first jet types to be widely produced at all.

Building and painting tips

Before building, wash the resin parts in lukewarm soapy water to remove the mold release residue. Cut the casting blocks off with a fine saw or a cutting disc, and never break them off. Level the contact patches with abrasive paper and sand wet, with respiratory protection. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue, because ordinary cement for plastic does not hold on resin. Apply a primer before painting, otherwise the paint would hold poorly on the smooth casting. On weighted wheels take care that the sagged part faces straight down. The surest way is to dry-fit the wheel, stand the model on a flat board and only then fix the joint. Sand the tire only minimally and separate the hub and the casing with masking tape or a template.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building the Vampire in 1:32 scale who want a realistic stance for the aircraft on the ground
  • Builders who are bothered by perfectly round wheels from a plastic kit
  • Anyone interested in a quick improvement to a model without touching its structure
  • Those who already have experience with resin and cyanoacrylate glue

The add-on set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. This is an add-on set of wheels for a model in 1:32 scale. The base Vampire kit has to be bought separately.

The tire is cast with a slightly sagged contact patch, as if the weight of the aircraft were pressing on the wheel. The model then stands on the surface more naturally than on the perfectly round wheels from the kit.

Cyanoacrylate glue, that is super glue. Ordinary cement for plastic does not bite into resin and the joint would not hold. On larger parts a gel version of the glue helps to strengthen the joint.

Yes. Wash the castings in lukewarm soapy water to remove the mold release agent, let them dry and spray them with primer. Without a base coat the paint rubs off smooth resin easily.
