In a large scale this place is one of the details a viewer notices, and a resin casting can offer crisper definition here than injection-molded plastic. An auxiliary power unit is a small turbine that provides the aircraft with electrical power and compressed air on the ground and while the main engines are being started, so that the crew is not dependent on a ground source. On the F/A-18 it is housed in the fuselage and shows on the surface of the airframe as a set of outlets and access covers. In photographs of machines in service this place tends to be heavily soiled with exhaust deposits, which is a rewarding prompt for weathering.
Wash the casting in lukewarm water with detergent. Cut the casting block off with a saw and sand the surface wet. Remove the original plastic part from the kit and level the seat, so that the part sits down with no gap. It is glued with cyanoacrylate applied with a toothpick. When painting, leave the area around the outlet darker: a thin oil or enamel wash and a fine pigment that imitates traces of exhaust gases come in handy. Do not overdo the effect, as in photographs it tends to stay in a narrow streak behind the outlet.
The add-on set is supplied unpainted. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
