For a large model of the German Starfighter: die-cut pieces in the coloring that commemorates the type's last flight with the test establishment at Manching.

For the Luftwaffe the Lockheed F-104 was the machine that carried the Starfighter name and at the same time the most controversial reputation of the postwar era. Germany operated more of them than any other country outside the United States and kept them in service for decades. The last examples finished their flying with the test establishment at Manching, where armament and new equipment were traditionally evaluated. The farewell finish with which the type was seen off there remains one of the most sought-after subjects among enthusiasts of the Cold War.
The Starfighter has a thin straight wing and a smooth metal surface on which absolutely nothing can be hidden. Every fingerprint, every grain of dust under a mask and the slightest unevenness of filler will come out after spraying. The set of masks does not solve that for you, but it relieves you of the most demanding part: the sharp outline of lettering and markings, which are lined in by hand on a polished surface really poorly.
A metal appearance calls for a perfectly smoothed base, so do not be sparing with sanding and intermediate polished coats. Stick the masks down only onto a fully cured surface, or the adhesive will pull the sheen off it. Lead the spray in thin veils and between coats wait longer rather than shorter. After removing a mask, inspect the edge against the light; a small run can be polished out before the final varnish closes it in. Anyone who does not dare attempt polished metal can reach for a more matte shade; it will not affect the edge of the markings in any way and the build will be more forgiving.
