About product

Hawker Tempest Mk.V 1:32 - an HGW masking set

This item is not a kit of the aircraft. It is a masking set for a model of the British Tempest in the Mk.V version in 1:32 scale. The pre-cut self-adhesive masks are stuck onto the clear parts, the paint is sprayed over them and once they are lifted a crisp transition stays between the frame and the glazing.

Mind the choice of version - the Mk.V is the most widespread version of the Tempest with the liquid-cooled Napier Sabre H-24 engine, while the Mk.II had a radial engine. The nose of the aircraft is completely different with that and the sets for the two versions cannot be interchanged. Check which version your kit represents.

The real subject

The Hawker Tempest Mk.V was a British single-engine fighter used from 1944. It grew out of the development of the Typhoon type but received a new, thinner wing of elliptical plan, which shifted its performance in the upper band of speeds. It was powered by the liquid-cooled Napier Sabre H-24 engine and the armament consisted of four cannons in the wing. The type was among the fastest British piston fighters of its time in flight at low altitudes and was used, among other things, in intercepting V-1 missiles.

Use and tips

Wash and degrease the clear parts, or the mask will not hold and the paint will creep under it. Move the masks with tweezers and press them down with a blunt point, above all in the corners. Spray thin coats; a heavy coat will leave a step at the edge. Lift the mask off while the paint is dry only to the touch. Spray the frames first in the shade of the interior and only then in the outer finish, so that they look right from the inside as well.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building a Tempest Mk.V in 1:32 scale.
  • Those who want crisp cockpit frames without cutting tape by hand.
  • Builders of British fighters of the end of the Second World War.
  • Modelers working with an airbrush in a large scale.

The masks are an accessory for a kit. The kit itself and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

In the engine. The Mk.V has the liquid-cooled Napier Sabre H-24 engine, the Mk.II a radial one. The nose of the aircraft is therefore completely different and the masks for the two versions cannot be interchanged.

No. It is a masking set, an accessory for a kit. A Tempest kit in 1:32 scale has to be obtained separately.

When the paint is dry to the touch but not yet fully cured. With fully cured paint there is a risk that the edge of the finish comes away.

The masks are cut to the shapes of a particular kit. So check the compatibility against the model you are building.
