A German aircraft mechanic of the years 1940 to 1945 in 1:32 scale. Sequence number five shows that this is the continuation of a longer numbered line which Black Dog builds up in pairs and keeps adding to with combined sets. It is a separate item, not a variant of the earlier numbers.
A dispersal stand on a field airfield suggests itself: an engine with the cowling panels swung open, a maintenance stand, a tarpaulin over the wing, jerrycans in the grass. The second route leads into a workshop, where the figure is surrounded by a workbench, a vise and crates of parts. Either will hold the attention even without a second figure, because work on a machine is a legible story. The area of the board matters more here than the number of accessories: the fewer objects around, the more strongly what the figure is doing stands out.
German overalls tended to be a single color and wore quickly to a faded look; lightened edges, washed-out seams and greasy marks work more reliably than sharp transitions. Build the leather of the boots and the straps on a dark base and lay the lighter tone on dry. Finish the face with light toning toward red around the nose and the ears, otherwise it looks waxy. Soften the transitions between layers rather than leaving them crisp; sharp edges look hard in this scale.
