Injection-molded plastic kit of the MiG-23ML Flogger-G in 1:32 scale from Trumpeter. The box holds over 700 parts on a large number of sprues, plus clear sprues, photo-etched parts, metal cores for the landing gear legs and rubber tires. The main draw: the kit has a moving variable-sweep wing, with both halves linked so that they move together, so you can fix the model with the wing spread or swept. There is also a detailed cockpit with an opening canopy, the R-29 engine with a removable rear fuselage for display, deflectable flaps, spoilers, stabilizers, the rudder and the airbrakes, and a folding ventral fin. The external stores cover short-range and medium-range air-to-air missiles, bombs, rocket pods, pods and drop tanks.
The MiG-23 is a Soviet fighter of the second half of the Cold War whose hallmark is the variable-sweep wing: the pilot changed the sweep in flight in order to combine a short take-off and landing with high speed in level flight. The ML version is an improved, lightened fighter variant with a more powerful engine, a better radar and a lower weight than the earlier versions; in the NATO designation it carries the name Flogger-G. The MiG-23 served with a wide range of Warsaw Pact air forces and beyond, including Czechoslovakia.
Dry-fit and adjust the wing mechanism before you close the fuselage, because once it is glued you can no longer reach it and excess cement easily jams it. Follow the instructions on the flaps and spoilers: the combination of positions has to match the way the wing actually stood, otherwise the model looks illogical. Finish and paint the engine and the rear fuselage separately. Glue with liquid capillary cement, and fill and sand the large fuselage seams, because in 1:32 absolutely everything shows. Paint with an airbrush over filling primer; Soviet and Czechoslovak Flogger camouflage schemes live on soft transitions and preshaded panels, so add exhaust smoke stains and dust on the landing gear.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
