About product

1:32 Mitsubishi A6M2b Reisen masking set (Dead Design)

It is a masking accessory to a plastic kit in 1:32 scale, not a model. The masks are cut to the outlines of a particular subject, so all you have to do is lift them off the backing, position them and press them down. At a large scale the set makes sense even for experienced builders: the areas are indeed bigger, but a mistake is bigger too and more easily seen. The extent of the set and the number of pieces are not stated here; the details in the package are binding.

The real subject

The Mitsubishi A6M2b Reisen was an early production version of the carrier-based fighter of the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service. The airframe was dominated by a radial engine, long cockpit glazing and a low-set wing with folding tips, which fitted the dimensions of a deck elevator. The design was driven by the aim of the lowest possible weight and the greatest possible range, which showed in a light structure and sparing equipment. For the modeler the most demanding place is exactly that long canopy with its many frames.

Masking and painting

With glazing it is the order that decides. Spray the frames in the interior shade first, because anyone who looks closely at the finished model sees them from inside, and repainting them later is no longer possible. Let the coat mature and only then lay on the outer camouflage shade, which covers the interior color only where it should. This two-stage procedure gives the frames the right look from both faces and costs nothing extra but one drying. Before masking the glazing, always check that it is free of fingerprints and dust, and use tweezers with smooth jaws to handle it. Remove any adhesive residue after taking the mask off gently, never with a solvent, which would fog the transparent part.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of the Reisen model in the large 1:32 scale
  • Modelers who want clean glazing frames without outlining by hand
  • Those who paint with an airbrush and work in stages
  • Builders for whom the time spent masking is the dullest part of the build

This is a masking set, not a model. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The interior shade. The frames are in view from inside on the finished model, and once the cockpit is closed up you can no longer repaint them.

It is not. It is a masking accessory, and the model has to be obtained separately.

Mechanically and gently, with a toothpick or a tip of soft plastic. A solvent would fog the transparent part.

It will. At a large scale you could measure a mask out by hand, but a ready-made cut is quicker and repeatable on further models.
