A masking set in 1:32 scale for the plastic model of the Curtiss P-40M Warhawk fighter from the Hasegawa kit. It is not a kit and these are not detail parts; they are self-adhesive masks shaped like the framing of the glazing, which are stuck onto the clear part, sprayed over together with the rest of the airframe and lifted off once dry. The single-sided version covers the outer side of the clear parts, which is the variant most modelers need for a standard paint job on the cockpit.
The P-40 was an American single-engine fighter with a liquid-cooled V engine and a characteristic radiator duct under the nose. The M batch was among the later versions with a lengthened fuselage and also served with Allied operators under the name Kittyhawk. The cockpit glazing is divided into several framed panes, so taping is tedious and the result is rarely even; that is exactly what the mask solves.
Wash the clear part in lukewarm water with detergent and let it dry so that the mask holds all around the perimeter. Pop the masks out with the tip of a scalpel or with tweezers, lay them on the frame and press them down with a soft tool, ideally a wooden stick, above all the edges. If the shape needs finishing up to the edge of the frame, run a fresh blade without pressure so that no groove is left in the clear plastic. Lay the paint on in thin coats and let them flash off in between; a heavy coat in one pass will run under the mask. The proven procedure is to spray the interior shade first and only then the exterior camouflage. Lift the masks shortly after drying, pulling at an angle along the surface. If you want the frames visible from inside the cockpit in color as well, the double-sided version of the set is intended for that.
The box holds the masking set only. The kit, paints and glue are not included, unless stated otherwise.
