A sizable injection-molded plastic kit of the American fighter Republic P-47D Thunderbolt in 1:32 scale from Trumpeter. The Dorsal Fin build depicts a late production machine with an added dorsal fin, a narrow triangular fillet ahead of the vertical tail that improved directional stability. The large scale brings rich detail on the massive radial engine, the cockpit and the surface. The exact contents of the package and the decal schemes are stated by the manufacturer on the packaging.
The P-47 Thunderbolt was among the largest and heaviest single-seat fighters of the Second World War. It was powered by a powerful Pratt & Whitney R-2800 radial engine with a turbocharger and carried eight heavy machine guns in the wings. On the late machines with a bubble canopy the side area behind the cockpit was reduced, which was dealt with by adding a dorsal fin to restore directional stability. The Thunderbolt stood out as an escort fighter and as a tough attack aircraft for strikes on ground targets.
At the large 1:32 scale, paint and bring out the cockpit and the engine first, and only then close the fuselage and the cowlings. Glue the canopy glazing with canopy cement and protect it with masks. Glue the parts with liquid cement for plastic. Apply a gloss coat before the decals and bring out the panel lines with a wash. Fit the external stores and the drop tanks only once the painting is done. The natural metal finish of the late machines calls for a smooth base and a thoroughly stirred metallic paint.
