1:32 P-51D Mustang

What the sheet offers

The decal sheet adds to a P-51D Mustang model in 1:32 scale the markings that cannot be managed with the needed sharpness by spraying or painting by hand. The printing holds sharp edges even on the tiny lettering and numbers, where a brush would bleed at this scale. Which variants the sheet carries and where the individual elements belong is shown by the manufacturer's instructions.

The real subject

The P-51D is an American single-seat fighter from the end of the Second World War. You can recognize version D by the bubble canopy and the lowered fuselage spine, which opened up the pilot's view to the rear. Its great range allowed Mustangs to escort bomber formations all the way to the target and back.

How the decals are applied

Before applying them, check in the instructions whether these are waterslide decals or a self-adhesive version: a waterslide decal separates from the backing only after soaking in lukewarm water, whereas soaking damages a self-adhesive element. The surface is prepared the same way in both cases, however. A decal holds only on a smooth gloss surface, because air is held under a matte finish and the edge shows after drying as a light border. Give the painted model a coat of gloss clear first, therefore, and let it cure. Lay the element in place and bring it into position with a soft brush; with waterslide decals then blot off the excess water with a paper tissue and let the area dry thoroughly. Only then give the model a matte coat or clear coat it according to the surface it is to have.
