About product

Pierced steel planking for field airfields, scale 1:32

A photo-etched diorama accessory from the Czech maker Brengun. It is neither a kit nor a part of an airplane: it is material for a base from which you build a surface corresponding to pressed steel panels. During the Second World War and in the postwar conflicts these were laid on soft or muddy ground so that aircraft could taxi over it; the individual panels interlocked with each other and formed a continuous grid with regular holes.

Why the photo-etched variant

Embossed paper or a plastic sheet always carry the same problem: the holes are only suggested and seen from the side it is apparent that they are blind. Photo-etched metal, by contrast, is cut right through, so laying it on a base produces real depth and the holes take in soil, dust and shadows. In the large 1:32 scale it is precisely this difference that shows best in a photograph, because the surface takes up a large part of the scene.

Usage tips

First prepare the base: a flat board, plaster or modeling compound with some unevenness suggested. Lay the photo-etched strips with a real overlap in the way the panels fitted into each other, and glue them with dispersion glue or super glue over small areas. Do not be afraid to leave some panels slightly bowed or turned, or even to leave one out altogether and reveal mud under it, as a regular flawless surface looks unnatural. It is painted over a primer in dark gray or gray-green, then comes a rusty wash, a dry brush on the edges of the holes and finally pigment worked into the holes, which ties the planking to the terrain. Between the panels it pays to suggest worn tracks in a darker color.

Who the accessory is for

  • Builders of aviation dioramas and field airfield scenes in 1:32 scale.
  • Modelers who want to put a model on a faithful base rather than on a smooth board.
  • Those who work with pigments and weathering and want a rewarding base.

The accessory is supplied unpainted and without a base. Glue, paints, pigments and terrain compounds are not included in the package.

FAQ

It was laid on the soft or muddy ground of field airfields so that aircraft could taxi over it. In a diorama you build a taxiing surface from it.

It is not. Only the photo-etched material of the planking is supplied. The base board and the terrain compound have to be obtained separately.

Over a primer apply dark gray or gray-green, then a rusty wash, bring the edges of the holes out with a dry brush and dust pigment in the color of the terrain into the holes.

On larger scenes several packages are commonly combined. The dimensions of the fret are given by the manufacturer on the packaging.
