The set contains a figure of a Royal Australian Air Force pilot in a standing position, in the form designated type 1. It is intended to bring a model of the F-111 in 1:32 scale to life, and for dioramas that capture activity on an airfield. The figure is supplied unpainted; the casting is resin, which with accessories of this kind allows finer detail in the folds of the clothing and the equipment than can be achieved by ordinary injection molding.
The Royal Australian Air Force operated the F-111 from the 1970s until 2010, and in its service it was the main strike and reconnaissance type. The crew consisted of two airmen sitting side by side. The crews' flying equipment matched the ordinary standard of the Cold War period and the time after it: a flight suit, a harness, an anti-g garment and a helmet with an oxygen mask. An airman like that standing by the machine or by the steps is a rewarding subject, because it immediately gives the viewer the scale of the whole model.
First wash the casting in lukewarm water with detergent, to remove any mold release agent residue, or the paint will hold badly. Cut away the casting remains with a sharp knife or a saw and sand the surfaces with respiratory protection. Then lay on a thin coat of primer, ideally with an airbrush. On a figure in this scale the classic approach works well: a base tone, a darker tone into the folds and gentle highlighting on the raised surfaces. The face deserves attention of its own; the eyes and the shadows beneath them will decide the overall impression more than the rest of the figure.
