The British flying corps Royal Flying Corps is usually called to mind by its airmen, but the overwhelming majority of the people on an airfield made up the support. This figure from the brand Black Dog opens the line of British mechanics in 1:32 scale and gives a diorama builder the chance to show exactly that neglected part.
British airfields of that time were grassy, makeshift and full of wood - crates, trestles, canvas shelters, drums. For a scene that means the mechanic does not have to stand by the machine: he makes sense by a set-aside spare part, by a work table or on the way to the aircraft with something in his hand. This distance from the model is actually an advantage, because it spreads the action over the whole area of the base and does not force you to cram everything into a meter around the fuselage.
Working clothing has plenty of seams, pockets and hems, on which it pays to show the wear. Leave the basic tone darker and brighten the edges of the sleeves, the shoulders and the knees gently, as if the fabric were worn through on them. A dry brush with the paint almost wiped out will do a better job here than a precise line. A thinned dark shade, on the contrary, should be left to run into the seams. The combination of both gives even a single-colored flight suit a readable structure.
