1:32 SB2C-4 Helldiver: Dead Design masks for spraying the US national insignia onto the carrier-borne dive bomber.
Responsibility details are not available.
This set does not deal with the cockpit but with markings: according to the name, the shapes are meant for the US national insignia on the Helldiver in a large scale. The insignia is therefore laid on with paint directly onto the surface of the model instead of as a decal, which on large areas is the most reliable way to make the markings look like part of the finish.
On a broken or rough surface a decal readily traps air and after drying its glossy edge shows through, which is called silvering. In 1:32, where the insignia is several centimeters across, that flaw is visible at first sight. A sprayed insignia has no edge, takes further weathering without the risk of peeling and accepts a matte or semi-gloss overcoat evenly.
The base has to be smooth and completely dry. The white area is sprayed first and in several thin coats, because over a dark navy finish it comes up slowly; only then does the blue follow. Always let the paint cure between the individual steps, so that the next mask does not pull a fresh film away. After lifting them, compare the position of the insignia on both halves of the wing while any shift can still be corrected.
