An accessory for a model of the Supermarine Spitfire Mk.II in 1:32 scale from Quinta Studio. The contents are a 3D printed and already painted interior printed on decal paper, which is carried onto the model in the same way as a classic decal. It is not a kit of the aircraft nor a part to be glued. The result is a cockpit with raised, color-finished details, without anything having to be bent, sanded or shaded with a brush.
The Spitfire Mk.II followed on from the first production version of the type and brought a more powerful power unit from the family of Rolls-Royce Merlin engines. It is therefore an early configuration of the Spitfire with a corresponding layout of the cockpit, which differs from the later versions in a number of details. Exactly for that reason interior sets are made for particular versions and are not freely interchangeable with one another.
With three-dimensional decals it is mainly the base that decides the result. The plastic part of the instrument panel usually has its own molded relief, which needs leveling flat, otherwise the decal will not seat and air pockets will stay beneath it. Sanding is done dry with fine paper and the surface is then cleaned of dust. A spray of the base interior color and a pass of gloss clear follow, because on a matte surface the decals break up and the edges of the carrier film stay visible. Only onto an area prepared this way does the element slide off the paper after a brief soak in lukewarm water and seat itself. A soft brush or a cotton swab presses the water out from beneath it with a gentle stroke from the center toward the edges. Decal chemistry is not used on printed resin, so press the relief down gently with a damp brush instead. The whole interior has to be finished before the fuselage half is closed up.
