The resin figure depicts a member of the deck crew of an American aircraft carrier in 1:32 scale. It carries the designation No. 3, which tells it apart from the other positions in the same series, so the individual pieces can be put together into a larger scene. It is not a finished painted product: the figure is supplied as a casting to be finished, that is cleaned up, assembled and painted. It is made by Black Dog, a Czech firm focused on resin figures and accessories.
Operations on the deck of an aircraft carrier are run by a numerous crew whose individual members have clearly divided tasks: directing and handling aircraft, working the catapult and the arresting gear, refueling, preparing armament or watching over safety. Color-coded vests and helmets serve to make it clear at first glance, even in the noise and the cramped space, who is doing which job. It is exactly that use of color that makes the deck crew a rewarding subject, because it brings strong accents into an otherwise gray scene.
First wash the casting in lukewarm water with a drop of detergent, otherwise the paint will not hold on the mold release residue. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw and sand the surface wet with respiratory protection. It is bonded with super glue, as ordinary plastic cement does not work on resin. After a base coat, work from the skin and the face to the clothing, and with the color of the vest and the helmet check in advance which function goes with it so that the scene makes sense. A dark wash in the folds and a gentle lightening of the edges help to bring it out. Paint the figure separately from the aircraft model and join them only at the end.
