A masking set from the maker Special Mask for a model of the British Westland Whirlwind Mk.I fighter in 1:32 scale. It is not a model and not decals, but an aid to painting: the masks cover the cabin glazing, so the frames can be sprayed with a sharp edge, without going over them by hand with a brush. The Inside/Outside form means that the set is laid out for both sides of the glazing.
The Westland Whirlwind Mk.I was a British single-seat twin-engine fighter of the start of the Second World War, unusual for its concentrated armament of 20 mm cannons in the nose. Watch out for a confusion of names: Westland later also produced a helicopter under the designation Whirlwind, but this set concerns the fighter aircraft in the Mk.I version.
The glazing frames are not the same on both sides. From inside they follow on from the color of the cabin, from outside from the external camouflage. If you mask only the outside, the inner side of the frames stays in the color of the clear plastic and that gives a finished model away when you look into the cabin. On an aircraft with glazing set high above the fuselage, looking inside is all the easier.
First wash the glazing and let it dry; masks do not hold on a greasy surface. Lift them off with tweezers and press the edge down with a toothpick, as it is precisely under an unpressed edge that the paint runs under. Spray in thin coats; a heavy coat creates a step that tears when the mask is removed. Take the masks off as soon as the paint is dry to the touch. Paint the inner sides of the frames before you close the cabin on the model, because afterwards you cannot reach them.
The set serves for masking during painting. The model, paints and thinners are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
