This is a set for building individual plants, not a finished tree and not a loose material. You pop the parts out of a precisely cut sheet, assemble them, and separate sumac bushes result, which you then plant into the terrain. The manufacturer is the Czech company Model Scene, a specialist in diorama vegetation. The version is given for 1:32 to 1:35 scale, that is for classic large dioramas with military vehicles as well as for figure scenes.
Sumac is a shrub to low tree with an open, umbrella-like spreading crown and long pinnate leaves made up of many narrow leaflets. It grows fast, tolerates drought and poor soil, and in Europe it spread as an ornamental that escapes from cultivation onto embankments, the edges of gardens, around fences, onto waste ground and into abandoned industrial compounds. That is exactly the setting to use in a diorama: sumac immediately marks a neglected, overgrowing corner off from maintained greenery in a readable way. In autumn the leaves turn a rich orange to red, which is the most striking feature of the whole plant.
Release the parts from the sheet with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface, do not tear them. The fine leaflets can be bent slightly over an edge before gluing, so that the plant does not have a flat paper look. Glue with thin PVA or cyanoacrylate applied with the tip of a toothpick; fine-tune the color with acrylic sprayed from a distance in light coats, so as not to soak the material. Anchor the stems into a pre-drilled hole and hide the base with turf, leaf litter or static grass. A group of several plants of different heights looks more credible than a single specimen.
The set contains material for building the plants. The glue, the paints and the base are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
