About product

M10 IIC Achilles, 17-pounder gun barrel 1:35 (MASTER)

A turned metal barrel for the British M10 IIC Achilles tank destroyer, that is the American M10 vehicle rearmed with the 76.2 mm anti-tank gun. It is an add-on part for a plastic kit, not a model of the vehicle. On this type the barrel of the long anti-tank gun is the eye-catching dominant feature of the whole model, so any inaccuracy shows up on it most of all.

Why replace the plastic barrel

An injection-molded barrel is always in two halves, and once glued a mold parting line runs along its whole length and has to be sanded out. On such a long, slender part it is easy to sand the shape away as well, and the cylinder stops being a cylinder. On top of that the plastic barrel tends to be slightly bent straight off the sprue, and on a long gun that shows at first glance. The turned metal part is straight and true, it has a constant diameter and above all a real bore at the muzzle. The weight of the metal also helps the barrel hold the elevation you set it at, and it does not deform even after years in a display case.

Building and painting tips

Cut the plastic barrel off at its seating, clean the hole out and try the barrel dry before you reach for the glue. Glue it with a super glue, or with a two-part epoxy where the fit is loose, which gives you time to line the barrel up with the axis of the turret. It is precisely the alignment seen from above and from the front that decides the result. Degrease the metal with alcohol before painting and apply a primer meant for metal, otherwise the paint will come off during handling. Bring out the muzzle and any muzzle brake with a dark wash and a fine rub, as the wear on a gun tends to be markedly different from the rest of the hull. When weathering the hull with dust pigments, leave the lower part of the barrel slightly dusted so that the part does not look like a foreign element.

Who the part is for

  • Builders of the M10 IIC Achilles in 1:35 scale
  • Modelers who do not want to sand a mold parting line on a long plastic barrel
  • Those who build British vehicles of the Second World War for the display case
  • Builders who combine metal barrels with photo-etched sets

This is an accessory to a plastic model, not a kit. The model, the paints and the glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

No, it is a replacement barrel. The kit of the tank destroyer has to be obtained separately.

It is straight and true, it has a constant diameter and a real bore at the muzzle. It does away with sanding the mold parting line, during which a long plastic barrel is easily deformed.

Try the fit dry, then glue it with a super glue, or with an epoxy where the fit is loose, which gives you time to line the barrel up with the axis of the turret.

Yes. Degrease it with alcohol and apply a primer for metal, otherwise the paint will come off during handling.
