The AH-1W is the twin-engine attack version of the Cobra used by the United States Marine Corps. The crew sits in tandem one behind the other in a narrow fuselage, and the stub wings carry the stores pylons. The cockpit is cramped and the instrument panels in it are clearly visible once the covers come off, so a detail set in 1:35 scale really does show on the finished model.
The basis is three-dimensionally printed colored decals on decal paper. They cover the instrument panels, the side consoles and further surfaces of both cockpits; the elements have raised relief and finished colors including the instrument labels. To these the set adds parts printed from resin, which supply the features that flat printing cannot manage. It is intended for the AH-1W kit from Trumpeter in 1:35 scale.
Remains of the print supports stay on the printed parts. Cut them off with a sharp blade a little away from the part and carefully sand the trace down so that the fine detail is not wiped away. The parts are not polystyrene, so do not bond them with cement for plastic; super glue holds them. Wash and degrease them before painting so that they are rid of print resin residue and the paint holds. Paint the surfaces under the decals first, let them dry thoroughly and go over them with a gloss coat, on which the element holds best. Then soak the cut-out element for about fifteen seconds in lukewarm water and slide it off the carrier paper into place; on an intricate surface a drop of super glue helps. Do not use a decal softener or a decal fixer, as the chemicals attack the printed resin.
The set aims at modelers who want to take the cockpit beyond the level of the plastic in the box but have no appetite for painting every dial with a brush. Even a less experienced builder will manage it; all that is needed is tweezers, a sharp blade and calm.
The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
