The decal set brings Hungarian army markings for the 38.M Toldi I light tank. It is a marking sheet on its own, not a kit, so it is taken for granted that you already have the model or will obtain it separately. Hungarian hardware is a less common sight in modeling cabinets than German or Soviet, and it is precisely the markings that set it apart from them at first glance.
The Toldi I was the first Hungarian production tank. It was based on the Swedish Landsverk L-60 design, had a welded hull, torsion bar suspension and four road wheels on each side, which gave it decent speed by the standards of the day. The armament consisted of a 20 mm weapon rounded out by a machine gun, equipment that was enough against infantry and lightly armored targets but was soon helpless against armored machines. Hungarian units set off for the Eastern Front with the Toldi I in 1941 and the machine proved itself there mainly as a reconnaissance vehicle. It was in this role, where movement and observation decide matters rather than firepower, that it served longest.
The Toldi is a small tank, so the markings fall on the small and often curved areas of the turret and the hull. It pays to work with tweezers and a damp brush, with which you nudge the design exactly into place while it can still be moved. Even the base out with gloss varnish in advance and carefully draw the excess moisture off with the corner of a paper towel once it is placed, so that the edge does not lift. Once it has dried, move on to a matte varnish and a light dust weathering from the bottom upwards.
