About product

A balalaika in 1:35 scale

This is a stand-alone scenic accessory, not a kit of a vehicle or an aircraft. The balalaika is a triangular three-stringed instrument which in a diorama scene legibly sets the setting at once and gives it a human dimension. In 1:35 scale it is a small object a few millimeters in size, added to a scene as a prop — propped against a wall, laid on a bench, on the bed of a vehicle or in the hands of a figure.

The same subject in three scales

The accessory also comes out in 1:48 and 1:72 scale. The scale is a fundamental distinguishing detail — for figures and vehicles in 1:35 reach for exactly this variant, otherwise the object will not look right in a scene.

What it is suited to

The instrument comes into its own in scenes of rest and the back area: a crew by a vehicle, a barrack room, a village cottage, a market, the interior of an inn or a station waiting room. It is exactly the small props that turn a model with a figure into a real diorama — a viewer can tell from them what is happening in the scene. It also works well paired with other musical accessories and pieces of furniture from the same diorama line.

Installation and painting tips

First separate the part carefully from the casting residue with a sharp scalpel or a fine saw, sand the face and degrease the whole accessory before painting. Choose the glue according to the material — with small resin parts cyanoacrylate glue works well, with plastic a thin cement for plastic. Spray on a thin primer, deal with the body in shades of wood followed by a dark wash in the joints, and suggest the strings with a thin stroke of the brush or a stretched hair-fine wire. A light sheen on the top and a matte surface on the rest will bring the instrument nicely to life.

Who the accessory is for

  • modelers who build a diorama with figures in 1:35 scale
  • anyone interested in scenes of the back area, villages and interiors
  • more advanced modelers used to working with small parts
  • collectors of scenic props who put the equipment of a scene together piece by piece

The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and other accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is a stand-alone scenic accessory for a diorama, not a kit of a vehicle or an aircraft. It serves as a prop in a scene with figures or vehicles.

This variant is cut for 1:35 scale. The manufacturer also makes the same subject in 1:48 and 1:72 scale, so you can choose according to your scene.

No. It is supplied unpainted and is meant to be cleaned up, glued into a scene and painted. Neither paints nor glue are included in the package.

The work is simple, but the part is very small. Tweezers, a sharp scalpel and a steady hand when painting come in handy.
