The BTR-40 was a Soviet light wheeled armored personnel carrier with four-wheel drive, which came about on the chassis of the GAZ-63 truck and entered service at the start of the 1950s. It was a simple and cheap machine: an open armored body for a reconnaissance squad or a few soldiers, light armor against small arms fire and splinters, and good mobility on roads. It served mainly as a reconnaissance and liaison vehicle and as an armored car for escorting columns. It was built in several versions, among them one with a roofed body and one with anti-aircraft machine guns, and it was exported in huge numbers to countries all over the world, where in some armies it served for decades after its service in the Soviet Union had ended.
