The chapeau de brousse is a cloth hat with a wide drooping brim, which the French army introduced under the designation pattern 49. It was worn in the warm and humid climate of overseas garrisons, where it protected against sun and rain better than a helmet or a peaked cap, and it became one of the recognition marks of the French soldier of the 1950s. For a modeler it is a striking element: the hat changes the silhouette of the head so much that a single exchange of headgear moves a figure into a different setting and a different time.
This is an accessory for figures in 1:35 scale, that is the headgear alone, not finished figures. This form is without a chin strap; a variant with a strap exists under a separate code, and both versions in 1:48 and 1:72 scale as well. The number of pieces in the package is specified by the manufacturer's description.
The parts are not of polystyrene; they are glued with super glue or with a two-part epoxy. Cut the excess material off with a sharp blade a little away from the part and sand the remainder down carefully, so that the thin edge of the brim is preserved. Wash and degrease the parts before painting and apply a primer. Cloth stands out when you lay a weak dark wash into the folds over the base shade and accentuate the edge of the brim and the crown with a dry brush.
The accessory will be appreciated by builders of figure scenes who want to turn standard figures into a particular unit. Figures, paints and glue are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
