A base for a diorama with the architectural motif of a column and a doorway. An element like this gives a composition a vertical line, which in display scenes is more valuable than it seems: it offers the viewer's eye a fixed point, and a model in front of it gains scale and depth at once.
While open terrain leaves a model standing freely, a column with a door creates a backdrop and at the same time divides the space into foreground and background. A figure by the door looks like a person going in or coming out, and the scene gains an event without a single further accessory. The motif is neutral in time and suits hardware and figures from various periods, because masonry architecture changes only slowly.
