A diorama building from RT-Diorama in 1:35 scale with the subject of a European barn. A farm building is popular in modeling above all because it has a large entry - and that makes it possible to bring a vehicle right into the building instead of only standing it alongside. This is not a kit of a vehicle or an aircraft but a scenic element into which you add your own models and figures.
The barn entry creates a frame that can be used in two ways. Either the vehicle drives part way in and the scene gains depth, or the opening stays empty and becomes a dark background against which the model stands out. Farm buildings of this type are also widespread across Europe, so the subject is not tied to one country or one period and serves the Western as well as the Eastern Front, and civilian subjects just as well.
Work with depth: a model pushed part way into the entry looks far livelier than a vehicle standing level with the facade. The contrast between a lit area and a dark interior is effective, but it calls for careful lighting in the display case. Place the figures by the entry and at the corners of the building, where they look natural. Before you fix the scene down for good, look at it from the eye level of the figures, because that is the angle from which a diorama is photographed and judged.
