About product

3.7 cm PaK 35/36 on the Pz.Kpfw 35R(f) chassis 1:35 — a Hobby Boss kit

An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:35 scale depicting a self-propelled carrier of a 3.7 cm anti-tank gun built on the chassis of a captured French light tank. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The manufacturer is Hobby Boss. The number of parts, whether photo-etched parts are present and the number of color schemes are given by the contents printed on the packaging.

The real subject

The basis of the vehicle is the French Renault R35 light tank, a small two-man machine with a cast turret, strong armor for its weight and a weak engine. After 1940 a large number of these tanks fell into German hands as war booty and were designated Panzerkampfwagen 35 R(f); the letter in brackets marks the French origin. Some of the machines went through a conversion in which the turret was removed and an open superstructure with a 3.7 cm anti-tank gun took its place. The result was a vehicle with a limited traverse and no overhead cover, which used an available chassis for the mobile employment of an already established weapon. The 3.7 cm gun was the standard anti-tank weapon of the early war and quickly became obsolete against later armor.

Building and painting tips

Build the running gear carefully: on vehicles with large road wheels and leaf-spring suspension every crookedly fitted wheel shows. Finish and paint the running gear and the inside of the open superstructure before the hull is closed, because afterwards the access is limited. The open fighting compartment is also an opportunity: the detail of the weapon, the seats and the ammunition stowage stand out well in it, so direct your main work with shadows and highlights there. Weather the tracks and the lower parts with pigments and thinned effects in several thin layers. Apply the decals onto a gloss clear coat and unify the whole model with a matte one.

Who the model is for

  • Anyone interested in captured equipment and chassis conversions
  • Builders of Second World War vehicles in 1:35 scale
  • Modelers who want a less usual type in their display case
  • Those who enjoy detailing an open fighting compartment

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
