About product

The German helmet M16 in 1:35 scale

A resin casting of the German steel helmet of the 1916 pattern in 1:35 scale. It is an accessory for figures, not a kit: the helmet is fitted onto a figure's head in place of the part out of the box or onto a head from another set of accessories. The casting renders the shape of the shell and of its lugs more cleanly than injected plastic can manage on a part of this size.

The real subject

The steel helmet of the 1916 pattern was introduced in the course of the First World War and replaced the older leather headgear. Characteristic of it is the deep pressed shell with a drawn-out nape and front visor and with a pair of side lugs, which served for ventilation and at the same time for attaching an additional frontal shield. The shape became the starting point for later patterns, and in slightly modified forms the helmet was still used in the 1930s, when shorter, more modern types replaced it. On a figure it is therefore a reliable clue for determining the period of a scene.

Fitting, cleaning up and painting

Wash the casting in lukewarm water with a detergent, so that no release agent stays on the surface. Cut the casting block off with a fine saw, level the contact surface with a file and sand it over wet with protection for your airways. Cut the original helmet off the figure and sand the crown of the head down level, glue the new part on with super glue and even the seam out with filler. Start the painting with a thin base coat; the matte shade of the shell will be brought to life by a dark wash in the recesses and a gentle accentuation of the edges and the side lugs with a dry brush.

Who the accessory is for

  • Conversions of figures for scenes from the period of the First World War
  • Dioramas from the 1920s and 1930s in 1:35 scale
  • Modelers who replace coarser plastic headgear
  • Completing figures of your own put together from parts

The accessory is supplied unpainted. The figure, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
